Meet Brandi
Brandi Simmons, MS CCC-SLP
Speech-Language Pathologist, Owner
I am an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist with 15+ years experience serving my clients. Believe it or not, I knew I wanted to be an SLP since third grade after watching the movie “The Miracle Worker.” Since then I have dedicated myself to becoming the best SLP I can be. My extensive experience includes 8 years working with adults at a hospital in the Shenandoah Valley Area and almost 14 years working with students ages 2-22 in local schools.
I wanted to continue serving my community by opening my own private practice to increase access to services for families. While schools provide excellent academic support, sometimes children need a little extra help beyond the school setting. I have repeatedly heard the struggles of parents to find outside speech therapy their child can receive without long waiting lists, and I feel called to bridge that gap. Simmons Speech Therapy exists to help children in early intervention, Pre-K and elementary school achieve their communication goals in a functional, engaging way.
I believe that communication is a basic human right. I love the saying, “I have ways of making you talk” because it is my passion to meet each client where they are and support their communication with evidence-based strategies that meet their unique needs. I am constantly striving to learn and grow as a neurodiversity affirming therapist and love to target therapy goals by utilizing play-based and literacy-based approaches. Building relationships with clients and their families is a key to client progress, and it brings me great joy to form strong connections through the power of communication.
I graduated from James Madison University with my B.S. and went on to receive my M.S. from Longwood University in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I grew up in Virginia and have seized opportunities to live in Utah, California, Florida, Connecticut, Arizona, Texas, and now Waldorf, Maryland. When I’m not being an SLP, you can find me with my husband, Thomas, and our spoiled mini poodle named Dunkin Donuts (Can you tell I really love sweets?). I enjoy taking long walks with Dunkin, exercising, and visiting different beaches. I am also a fan of the new DisneyJr show “Pupstruction”! I look forward to getting to know each other more as we embark on this journey together!

What payments do you accept? We are currently private pay only, meaning payment is due at time of service. If you would like to take advantage of your insurance plan, Simmons Speech Therapy can provide a Superbill for you to submit to insurance for reimbursement of out-of-network services.
-
What are the benefits of private pay? There are many benefits of paying privately for therapy rather than going through insurance. Private pay reduces the time it takes to start services and allows your therapist to spend more time dedicated to quality care rather than billing insurance. It also means there are no minimum qualifications for starting therapy. Your child’s therapy can target goals that are meaningful to you and improve quality of life.
-
Where does therapy take place?Therapy can take place in the environment that is easiest for you. We see clients in person at our office or in clients’ homes. Simmons Speech Therapy is also happy to provide teletherapy for your convenience.
-
What if my child has an IEP or recent speech evaluation somewhere else?If your child has an updated evaluation or IEP that you can provide us, we may not need to conduct another evaluation and can start with therapy right away.
-
How long does an evaluation or treatment session last?Your child’s speech and/or language evaluation at their initial appointment will last approximately one hour. Treatment sessions occur weekly for 30 minutes or 50 minutes depending on your child’s needs.
-
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy? If your child has persistent and significant difficulties with communicating, a speech and language evaluation might be beneficial. This could include their ability to articulate clearly, understand others, use vocabulary, form sentences, or interact socially. The following ASHA norms may be helpful in determining if your child is meeting milestones for their age.
-
How do I get started?Fill out the contact form below and we will contact you to schedule a free 15 minute phone consultation! When you are ready to move forward, we will schedule an initial evaluation where recommendations will be made for therapy moving forward.
